Web Hosting DSM

Problem Statement:

We have (3) Indoor Nest Cams and two (2) Outdoor Nest Cams. Would like to watch and store seven (7) days video at lowest cost. Worth noting is that the outdoor cams are on 24/7, whereas the indoor are on only during vacations and scheduled nightly hours. Or are they... LOL

Last week Amazon announced is cancellation of unlimited storage on their drive service. I used this service to backup the Virtual Machine (VM) images from Amazon Web Services (AWS) for clients. I went to many sites, including Dropbox business, and Box. Below is the solution I came up with that is working well. Dropbox almost won but the 3-user license was a waste since I only need 2 uses…also expensive. Mind you that I am using the Grandfather, Father, Son method of backup (monthly since clients have little changes) and keeping for one year. If this solution helps then share with others.

I wanted to give the new internet provider some time before writing this post. In short, I switched from TWC to AT&T Internet at the end of November 2016. For 30 days, I had both providers as a backup and failsafe until the cable was buried and I could be assured that there was no serious outages.

The Ling Ho Jen Meditations are proverbs of the Chi Hsing Boxers of Watu. These meditations are the direct path to truth or tao, as taught by Watu. His students seeks the concepts of the ultimate way of life. The way has been handed down from instructor to instructors for countless ages. In the text, wisdom to Great Bear, Wing Cobra, Great Thunder, Spider, Whirl Wind, Man of War, and Morning Star, these are people living today who studies under master Watu. "Those who are yet to come" are add ons from Watu to reflect towards future generations. "Wisdom to Ani" is the daughter of Watu, so in the future we shall see add ons to the Ling Ho Jen Meditations.

Prior to these steps ensure that your existing domain with your current hosting provider is unlocked, privacy is disabled and you have access to the “administration, technical or billing” email address used in the WHOIS database. However, this is only if you want to transfer your domain to the Route 53 service which is optional. You DO NOT to have your domain with Amazon to use Lightsail.

Amazon Lightsail Website:

A. Preparing the new website host for move to Lightsail:

 1.    Create an Instance from the Amazon Lightsail Menu.

 2.    Choose your plan. For low traffic use the $5.00 monthly.

 3.    Give the instance a unique name. Then click Create.

 4.    Next, give your newly created instance a “Static IP” using the “Create other resources” button. You can manage 5 for free. You do this by attaching it to the instance you just created.

 5.    Finally, create DNS Zone for your new instance. Regardless of where it is hosted and not matter where the domain is. I created the big two “A” and “CNAME” for each instance and pointed it to the static IP on both accounts.

 6.    Within usually a few minutes you can type in the Static IP URL and see the WordPress instance you just installed. Now we need to log into the newly created WordPress site and make some backend changes, install a very valuable plugin, and prepare our existing website for the transfer/move.

 7.     NOTE : You can only have 3 DNS Zones for FREE with your Lightsail plan. Therefore, if you want more than 3 you have to use Route 53 for configuration beyond 3.

B. Preparing your new WordPress Instance for receiving the data from your old WP site.

 1.    Click on the “Bitnami” page banner in the lower right hand corner of your new instance. You will need to login using “user” and the password from your backend. Just follow the instructions on the hyperlink, or see below:

https://docs.bitnami.com/aws/faq/#how-to-find-application-credentials

In short, connect using your SSH within the Lightsail website, and run the following command to get your default  password. NOTE: You cannot copy paste commands, you need to type them in manually.

cat bitnami_application_password

After you copy password then type

  exit

 2.    Now use the username “user” and that password you just obtained to log into the new instance you created at the static IP URL.

 3.    Now that you are logged in as the default administrator for the new WP site. Start by updating the necessary plugins, removing or adding the plugins you desire.

 4.    Be sure to update the “All-in-One WP Migration” plugin as this is the one we will use to move the old website over to our new instance.

 5.    Next, because of the 512MB limit, I had to purchase the “Unlimited Extension” $59 from the ServMask website in order to move the larger WordPress (WP) Databases (DB) because many of the blogs contained media such as photos. Once purchased I downloaded and then installed both the “All-in-One WP Migration” and the unlimited extension to the old website to be moved, and the new instance I created .

Existing/Old WP Website:

A. compress, migrate and move the old WP site to your new instance with AWS Lightsail.

  1.     Ensure you notify your users of the time you will move the site in order to get the latest posts moved. Recommend late at night when activity is the lowest.

 2.    Click the “All-in-one WP Migration” tool and select export option. There are advanced options that may shrink your file size depending on your selection. I always checked the following: Do not export spam comments, Do not export inactive themes, do not export inactive plugins, do not export cache files.

 3.    Next click export… Your location is up to you, however for this tutorial I used “Export to file” and then downloaded to my computer.

New Instance/New WP Website:

A: decompress, migrate and restore the data from the old website to the new created instance.

 1.    Now, logged in as “user” with admin rights. Select the “All-in-One WP Migration” plugin on the new instance and select import. Locate your file and choose import.

 2.    Be sure to let it overwrite the existing database and be sure to save your permalinks twice as instructed from the plugin.

 3.    It is that easy, your new website is up and running just like the old one.

 4.    NOTE: You will be logged out and the “user” login is replaced. To log back in you will need to use your credentials from the old website from now on.

 5.    Delete the “All-in-One WP Migration” plugins as they are no longer needed.

 6.    BEFORE MOVING TO THE NEXT STEP. Be sure that your nameservers, whether hosted with AWS or another provider, are updated and pointing to the Nameservers with AWS Lightsail. Tjis will ensure that while we move on through the process that your traffic and any users that update posts etc. Will be able to do so using the new location of the website.

 7.    Lastly, we will remove the Bitnami Page Banner in the lower right corner, now that we know our new WP site is up and running.

 8.    To remove the page banner simply follow the steps on this page https://docs.bitnami.com/aws/components/bninfo/ . Simple 2 commands below after logging into your instance using the SSH button:

sudo /opt/bitnami/apps/wordpress/bnconfig --disable_banner 1 (space between banner and the number 1)

then restart apache

    sudo /opt/bitnami/ctlscript.sh restart apache

Enjoy your new website! – Remember it may take some time to propagate usually no more than 24 hours.

Wife and I have eaten here two times already this month after she recommended on day. The first time we ate the Chicken and Shrimp pad Thai. The second visit we ate the chicken pad Thai again and a lunch special of Kung Pao with white rice. Servers both times were friendly and fast, we were in and out within an hour. Highly recommend and the Kung Pao is my new favorite lunch special. Thanks for reading.
